A Folkfree 2003 őszén alakult Hajas Gábor ötlete alapján, aki céljaként azt tűzte ki, hogy a magyar népzenei értékeket mai hangszerelésben, de a zenei örökséget tiszteletben tartva tárja a közönség elé. Az ötletek megvalósítását Koroknay András basszusgitárossal közösen kezdték el, akkor még instrumentális formában. Az évek során a Folkfree zenéje ösztönösen formálódott egy olyan produkcióvá, ahol a tekerőlant és a népdalok jelenléte, valamint a több műfaji elemet (drum&bass, dub, reggae) igényesen felvonultató hangszerelés kiforrott és egyedi stílusjegyet adott a zenekarnak. Jelenlegi felállása 2006-ban jött létre. A Folkfree élőben igazi energiabomba, az éles váltások, a kompromisszummentes hangzás, és a közönséggel való folyamatos kapcsolat nem sok pihenőt ad a koncertre látogató nagyérdeműnek.
A zenekar fennállása óta jelentős hazai fesztiválokon lépett fel, 2007 decemberétől pedig egy saját szervezésű turné keretében koncertezett a Freestylers (UK) hivatalos MC-jével, MC SirReal-lel és MC K.W. Arms–szal. 2008 nyarán a zenekar a két angol mc-vel turnézott Folkfree ft The Freestlyers MCs néven, egy hazánkban egyedülálló Folkfree és Freestylers számokat is magában foglaló produkcióval. 2009 februárjában került sor első nagylemezük bemutatójára az A38 Hajón, illetve a szombathelyi Savaria Moziban. A lemezen a két jól ismert angol mc mellett Bina a Bauchklang-ból (GER/AT) és KRSA a Pannonia Allstar Ska Orchestrából is helyet kapott, akik természetesen a lemezbemutatókról sem hiányozhattak.
A lemez Claptrap néven jelent meg szerzői kiadásban, melyen az említett nevek mellett közreműködik még a francia reggae előadó, Tribuman (FRA) is. Az album debut buliján nem kisebb név, mint a brit Dub Pistols atyja, Barry Ashworth pörgette a lemezeket reggelig, akire olyan nagy hatással volt a koncert, hogy azóta is szoros kapcsolatot ápol a zenekarral. Ennek bizonyítéka, hogy a Folkfree egyedülálló módon a 2009-es Balaton Sound nagyszinpadán együtt zenélt a Dub Pistols-szal.
„Szakítós” című daluk az MR2 Petőfi Rádión hallható és a rádió „Egy kis hazai 3” c. válogatás cd-én is helyett kapott. „Kimentem” c. videóklippjük a MTV-n rotációban látható. A Folkfree egyedi hangzása folyamatosan képes újat nyújtani a közönségnek, mely nem csak határainkon belül, hanem azokon kívül is befogadó fülekre talált.

The idea of the Folkfree band was created by Gábor Hajas at 2003, his aim was to create a unique style music based on traditional Hungarian virtue with a modern harmonization. The realisation of the ideas was started with a bassist, András Koroknay, then yet in an instrumental form. Over the years, Folkfree music naturally turned into a performance where the sound of the hurdy-gurdy and the traditional Hungarian folk music well assorted with drum and bass, dub, reggae and other modern electronic elements provided a mature, unique style for the band. Current line-up was set up in 2006. The band alive is a boomblast, with nasty beats, heavy sound, and an audience based show, wich keeps the legs moving all night long.
The band played at all the main festivals and clubs around Hungary. Since December 2007 they have organized a mini-tour with MC SirReal (Freestylers UK) and MC K.W. Arms (UK). After the success of the 2008 spring concerts with them, Folkfree toured along the summer festivals under the production name: "Folkfree ft Mc SirReal & KW Arms", a special productions of our country with unique Folkfree and Freestylers songs.
Their first album 'Claptarp' debut was in February 2009 on A38 Concert Ship in Budapest. The album Claptrap was released at their expenses (as author's edition) Featuring the French reggae artist, Tribuman (FRA) and the artists mentioned above. On debut party of the album a great name, Barry Ashworth, the father of the Dub Pistols, rode the plates until morning, and he had been impressed so much that he has been in a close relationship with the band.
The song "Szakítós" (Tearing apart) and "Szerbia" can be heard on MR2 Petőfi Radio (the biggest radio station of the country) and it takes place on MR2 selection album.
The video "Kimentem" (I went out) regularly appears on Music Television Hungary and raised on the MTV top ten chart to the 7th place for weeks. The band was invited to the MTV ICON festival by Coke, where they played remix hits of the band Hungária (the biggest Hungarian Rock'n'Roll Band of '70-80 years)
Year 2010 seems to be the busiest year of Folkfree's lifetime. We have started to record our new LP, we are working together with one of the legends of the Hungarian folk music: Ferenc Sebo. Besides these things several important things happened with the band, we shot a professional video clip for "Serbia" which could be seen on MTV and on the biggest video websites. Folkfree just started the 2010 spring/summer tour all over Hungary and countries outside.
The Folkfree unique sound is continuously able to astonish their audience and found recipient ears not only in Hungary, but also abroad .
